Evil Dead, but Naughty Delight

Bree and I went out to the theatre last night. It seemed a good enough time for a little culture... a little high brow company... a little class...

Who am I kidding? That doesn't sound like me at all.

We did go the theatre, don't get me wrong - but it wasn't to see some fancy show. We hit up the Venice Theatre's production of Evil Dead: The Musical.

I don't want to spend a lot of space gushing about the show itself, but there are a few things that should be mentioned. Mostly, it merits saying that the play is vicious, bloody, and anything but serious. True appreciation of it hinges on being a fan of Bruce Campbell and the Evil Dead movies... but even so, it is a delight of a show that raises some cheap laughs and is well worth price of admission.

What I wanted to talk about is the theatre and its players. This particular theatre was an absolute dive. It was old, run down, and cramped. There were maybe 100 seats crammed so tightly together that I spent the entirety of the play with my arms crossed over my chest and my legs under my chair (which, I might add, was actually broken). The stage was equally small and I was amazed it could contain a full cast, set, and props. And I'm pretty sure there was a bit of a funky odor... but that might have belonged to one of the other patrons.

But despite the downfalls, the show was a delight. The cast was highly energetic and talented. And when a mishap occurred, they was quick to act through the screwups and move forward.

Do yourself a favor. Go to the local theatre. Check out local actors, singers, and dancers...

You may be pleasantly surprised.
